According to the 1870 Census he is working in a Quartz Mill in Twonship 1, Amador County. In 1880 he worked at a Quartz mill in Plymouth. In the 1894 Sacramento City and County Directory, John is shown as living at 2301 P Street, a block away from his brother and sister-in-law George William & Mary (Kerth) Nicolaus. According to 1898 Californornia Voter Regestration: Nicolaus, John was 50 years old, 5 foot, 7 inches, had dark complextion, brown eyes and gray hair. He was a Millman, born in Germany, and lived at 1417 20th street. According to Katie's brother Anton, the KOCH family came to California in Feb 1860.
